Debunking the Mysteries of Cloud Computing!

Despite the significant presence and ever growing demand, Cloud Computing is still a mystery to many. People seem to have acknowledged its importance, but it seems that they have not yet understood it completely and hence the optimum use of it is still a long way.

It’s not possible to pinpoint the exact number of rumors and myths that are still prevalent in the market concerning cloud computing but let us try and resolve a few of them.

What is a cloud?

It is not a single server or data centre where each and everyone is dumping their data and files. It is more like a gym’s locker room but with better security and no smell.

Rumour/Myth:

Many people believe that cloud is just a large storage drive or a combination of multiple storage device that store all the data in one place, so there is just one big cloud present.

Reality:

There are no fixed number of clouds. A few are public where whatever is present can be easily accessed like news portals while others are private like your Gmail account. There are few hybrid cloud as well like Facebook feed.

Security:

It is one of the basic requirement when people transfer sensitive pieces of information or save their files for future reference. Also, the recent hacks into the cloud of many celebrities’ Imgur accounts and leaked images have had an impact on cloud computing and their security related issues.

Rumour/Myth:

Many business owners and consumers believe that cloud is not a secure place. They still prefer to store important data on a hard drive, instead of uploading it on the cloud.

Reality:

For general public Cloud computing is many folds more secure than storing the data on physical drives. Firstly there can’t be any physical damage to the drive nor can it be stolen or destroyed. If we consider the use of cloud technology for business purposes than too, it is safe to say that it is more secure means of storing data compared to data centres. Even though it still has loopholes but the security standard of cloud technology is higher than its contemporaries.

Cost: Whenever a new technology is introduced, or people are asked to switch and try something different the most common excuse they come up with is costing.

Rumour/Myth:

It is a debatable issue while people perceive that while switching they will have to incur double the cost of saving data and also the duplicacy in the data stored will also be an issue.

Reality:

The upfront cost of switching and migrating to use cloud technology is sizeable but if we take a look and the larger picture here we will realise that the amount saved over time makes the investment looks insignificant.
Apart from these a few more prominent myths that are prevailing are the use of a technical team to handle the cloud and also its limit in business. We will take those up in our upcoming blog.
