3 Easy Step to get tsconfig.msc & tsadmin.msc working on Windows 2012 R2

Have you noticed that tsconfig.msc and tsadmin.msc are missing since Windows 2012?   These are very convenient utilities and they are often much easier than using server manager or group policy to achieve the same tasks. Luckily its not too hard to get the working again and to create a convenient shortcut on the desktop or taskbar.

For example, you can use tsconfig.msc to make all rdp sessions log out when they are disconnected for say 30 min

For Step 1 and 2, if you dont have Windows 2008 R2, you can download the files here if you prefer

Step 1: Copy these files from a Windows 2008 R2 Server

  • c:\windows\system32\tsconfig.msc
  • c:\windows\system32\tsadmin.msc
  • c:\windows\system32\tsadmin.dll
  • c:\windows\system32\tsconfig.dll
  • c:\windows\system32\wts.dll
  • c:\windows\system32\en\tsconfig.resources.dll
  • c:\windows\system32\en\tsadmin.resources.dll

Step 2: Export these keys on a Windows Server 2008 R2 by using regedit.exe

Find these keys and then right click and choose File ->Export

  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\SnapIns\FX:{80aaa290-abd9-9239-7a2d-cf4f67e42128}]
  • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MMC\SnapIns\FX:{3FCE72B6-A31B-43ac-ADDA-120E1E56EB0F}]

Step 3: Import these files on the Windows 2012 R2 computer using regedit.exe

Choose file import and select each .reg file above one at a time to import them both.

Note:  For step 1 and 2, If you dont have a windows 2008 R2 server,  you can download a copy here

Step 3:  Test by running a command prompt and run tsadmin.msc and tsconfig.msc
